How to Join
To join What.CD via #what.cd-invites, you must pass an interview. This interview will test your knowledge of our acceptable transcoding policies, BitTorrent, various audio formats and codecs, etc. It is highly recommended that you prepare for the interview by reading "Prepare for the Interview." You will have three opportunities to interview for an invite, so make each interview count!

Joining #what.cd-invites
Before joining #what.cd-invites, several considerations must be made. First, make sure you are using a decent IRC client such as mIRC (Windows), xChat (Linux), or Colloquy (Mac OS X). Second, make sure you are not connecting via a webchat, proxy, TOR, or shell, as connections of this type are not allowed in #what.cd-invites. Third, use your home connection. Also please choose a nickname that isn't a generic first name. You have no idea how many Bobs, Nicks and Johns we see.
To join the What.CD server and #what.cd-invites:
- Connect to IRC Server: irc.what-network.net Port: 6667 (6697 for SSL).
- Type '/join #what.cd-invites' in your client.
- Read the topic.
Note: Do not join other channels on the IRC server and ask for invites. You will be banned from the server.
Joining the Queue
Once you are comfortable with the material covered in "Prepare for the Interview," it is time to interview. #what.cd-invites operates effectively and efficiently by using a bot to manage the queue of interviewees.
To join the queue:
- Visit http://www.speedtest.net (from your home connection), and copy the 'Direct Link' of your test.
- Have links to your user profiles at other private trackers ready.
- Type !queue <direct link> (e.g. !queue http://www.speedtest.net/result/1.png).
- Wait patiently until you are interviewed.
If you leave the channel or disconnect from IRC, you must re-queue when you re-join #what.cd-invites.
Note: The speedtest link must be generated prior to queueing (i.e. old speedtests are not allowed).
Surviving #what.cd-invites
Similar to a job interview, the interviewers' first impression of you can affect the outcome of your time spent in #what.cd-invites. Here are some tips to make your time spent in #what.cd-invites a pleasurable experience for both you and the interviewers:
- Several commands used to communicate with the bot are reserved for the interviewers only. Using '!next' and '!status' will result in you being kicked from the room, in addition to losing your position in the queue. The only command interviewees need to use is '!queue'.
- Your success during the interview is the sole determinant for whether or not you receive an invite. Therefore, statements such as, "I have a seedbox!" or, "I have so much rare music to share!," are inconsequential if you are unable to pass an interview.
- Since interviews are done on a volunteer basis, giving an estimated wait time is impossible. Wait times of up to two hours are not uncommon. In most cases, you will be interviewed within an hour. Asking interviewers to give you an estimated wait time will only serve to irritate them and discourage them from interviewing you. Considering the varying wait times until one will be interviewed, it is advisable to set an alert that will notify you when it is your time to be interviewed. Individuals that miss their interview will be kicked from #what.cd-invites and will have to requeue.
- Do not idle in #what.cd-invites. If you are reading "Prepare for the Interview," please '/part' the channel and return when you are ready to queue and be interviewed.
- Do not PM (private message) interviewers.
